Digital photography is a film-free photography that utilizes a digital camera to capture an image signal of a subject, record it and transform its analog form into a digital form. Without a film, the recording of the image is achieved by using a photo sensor. The type of the photo sensor generally used inside any digital cameras is one of the two kinds; CCD (Charge-couple device) or CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor). The function of the photo sensor is to convert light into electrical charges. The charge in an analog form then is turned to digital value by an analog to digital converter (A/D Converter or ADC). The digital value or image is recorded on camera data storage medium. The digital image data can be stored, displayed, manipulated, printed and transferred using a digital computer system.
การถ่ายภาพดิจิทัล เป็นวิธีการถ่ายภาพที่ไม่ใช้ฟิล์มถ่ายภาพ อาศัยกล้องดิจิทัลในการนำเข้าสัญญาณภาพ บันทึกสัญญาณ และแปลงสัญญาณในรูปแอนะล็อกให้เป็นดิจิทัล การที่ไม่ใช้ฟิล์มในการถ่ายภาพ ในการบันทึกภาพเกิดขึ้นได้โดยอาศัยอุปกรณ์รับแสง อุปกรณ์รับแสงที่ใช้กันทั่วไปในกล้องดิจิทัลมีอยู่ด้วยกันสองชนิด คือ ซีซีดี และซีมอส หน้าที่ของอุปกรณ์รับแสง คือ แปลงแสงให้เป็นประจุไฟฟ้า จากนั้นประจุไฟฟ้าที่อยู่ในรูปแอนะล็อกจะได้รับการแปลงให้เป็นค่าดิจิทัลหรือภาพดิจิทัล ภาพดิจิทัลได้รับการบันทึกในสื่อเก็บข้อมูลของกล้อง ภาพดิจิทัลสามารถเก็บ แสดง จัดการ พิมพ์ออก และถ่ายโอนไม่ใช่ฟิล์ม ข้อมูลภาพดิจิทัลสามารถเก็บ แสดง จัดการ พิมพ์ออก และถ่ายโอนด้วยระบบคอมพิวเตอร์
